Overview
Prosodio’s product, Pointer, is a software application that works with, and enhances the experience of reading between a caregiver and child. The application incorporates real-time speech processing to emphasize words and other elements as a human reader reads a digital book aloud. This solution maintains the pleasure of being read to by a loved one while leveraging emergent literacy research findings and engaging children’s natural curiosity.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
With virtual school starting for her oldest child, Aubrey wants to feel empowered with the technology she uses to instill a love of literacy and make the bonding experience of reading aloud together a positive and productive one.
However, due to a busy work-from-home schedule, Aubrey can’t always monitor her children’s reading progress, so Aubrey needs to know that her kids are measurably learning enough from each storytime to feel confident they can continue reading on their own.
SCOPE & CONSTRAINTS
After speaking extensively with the CEO of Prosodio Inc., we were able to identify the main problems they wanted to solve.
Create an application that has an interactive user interface to pair with Pointer’s real-time speech processing engine for parents and children to use during reading time
Design a captivating user interface within the product that will create an engaging and intuitive user experience for both children and parents when reading together.
Develop a product that will have parents bond and enjoy reading to their children on a consistent basis.

HERE IS OUR STORY...
USER QUOTES REGARDING USER FRIENDLY / ACCESSIBILITY APP:
“Not many internet providers out here...” (Ability to work offline)
“Going back and forth between platforms is a struggle.” (Single platform and consistency)
“...I’m not very computer literate…” (Not too technical; more straightforward and simple)
Understanding the background, our steps:
-
Interviewed Ruben, the Client.
-
Reviewed his research on Parent and Child Literacy.
-
Began our research with relevant articles.
-
Heuristics Evaluation and Comparative Analysis.
“Engaged for half an hour would be great.”
--Rachel, Parent
“Kid doesn’t want to do school work and rather play video games or watch TV.”
--Rachel, Parent
“Do this or no dessert!” (Power struggles)
--Christine, Parent
The top 4 pain points discovered during
User Interviews include:

DEVELOP
We started with the original color swatches based on the prosodio, LLC. and Pointer app logos to create the initial color palette.
This was the first design of the main login page for the Pointer App. I used the bold color pallette from the Prosodio, LLC. branding to start off the page and go into the step-by-step walkthrough tutorial.
Then through usability tests, we found that we wanted to make the colors more accessible for the color blind and used it to make our color choices easier for children and parents that are color blind to use this app.
CREATE YOUR STORY MODE
BEFORE
originally, in the create your story mode, we had originally existing characters from well-known franchises like Disney and Pokemon. through usability testing, we saw that it detracted children from creating their own stories and distracted them by having them create more fan fiction of their favorite characters.
AFTER
In the revised iteration, we had more generic characters that allowed children to focus more on their stories and at times, helped them generate more unique ideas based on different stickers that represented something they wanted to incorporate.

DELIVER
The Prototype
Once all of the feedback from the usability testing was gathered, we were able to make the adjustments and incorporate them into the design for the prototype. Thus resulting in the completion of the mission to deliver the MVP version of the Pointer app to the Client.
Next Steps
The goal of delivering a minimum viable product (MVP) to the Client was reached. However, if given more time, future features that were found during the research and development of the app could be built out. Some of these features are:
• Prototyping with voice triggers
• Exploring library content
• Expand achievements
• Make the app functional across all device platforms
• Build out the portal/dashboard for Educators
